Steel reinforcement intended for use in the works shall be delivered clean and free from dust, mill scale, oil and grease and shall be stored on or near the site in a dry weatherproof building. Steel reinforcement, prior to steel fixing on site, shall be bent cold by hand or power operated machines producing a gradual and even bending motion. Steel reinforcement shall not be re-bent. Steel fixing on site shall be carried out by competent steel fixers. To prevent displacement of the steel reinforcement during concrete the steel bars shall be secured one to the other - steel fixing, and steel supports provided between layers of the steel reinforcement. The steel reinforcement shall be fixed - steel fix, by means of soft annealed mild steel wire of 1.6mm thickness. Stainless steel tying wire can be used for exposed concrete soffits. During steel fixing the steel reinforcement, adequate cover shall be maintained to the steel reinforcement. A revised version of the British Standard for cutting and bending steel reinforcement rebar has been published by the standards by BSI BS 8666:2005 outlines the requirements for scheduling, dimensioning, bending and cutting of steel reinforcement.
